The Wisdom Of The Body

Today was my first in-person yoga class since COVID. Because we are still phase 2 of re-opening in Rhode Island, I knew it would be different and it was. Instead of 20 people in every corner of the room,  there were 6 people spread far apart in the studio. Instead of heat in the room, there was an open sky light and air pouring in. Instead of the teacher milling about adjusting us, she stayed rooted on her mat.

With our new world,  I found I have been residing in my head for a long overdue stay. But when we started moving, the music turned on and within five minutes I was reconnected. Reconnected to my body, my essence and my knowing. Yoga and music provides me a container to go within, a mediation in motion, I am in flow.  I am aware of the synergy of breath and movement. But more than anything this space within myself allows my knowing to rise. It's like a spring that bubbles up inside, it feels like coming home. This space is where I want to live from, it strips away the ego and allows my authentic self to reappear. For the past few weeks I was wrestling with some minor irritations with my health all of which I dumped into the “allergy bucket”. I was wrestling because I was in my head, and could not access my inner knowing. Once I was reconnected to my body it spoke to me, like lightening........OH of course it all clicked.

As we moved toward the end of the class the teacher put on a song by U2 called Wide Awake. She set us up for an 8 min kriya of intense arm movements. For 8 minute we vigorously opened and closed our arms. All I felt was my body purging, letting go of what did not serve me. Tears welled up in my eyes, I felt like I had lost layers.  As I left the studio with my heart wide open and deeply rooted in my knowing I felt like I was glowing from the inside out.

The insight that I captured was this: My body holds the wisdom. When I live in my head, I am cut off from my knowing. Despite all of the change, the most important thing to remember is that by connecting to my body, I will always connect to the wisdom I need. My body knows all, and stores my joy, sadness and everything in between.

My body is wise, sending me messages all the time. The wisdom is there.

How about you? Which parts are you connected to; which parts are you cut off from? I’d love to hear, please comment below.

Many thanks to my Yoga Instructor today- Sheri Silva- you can find her at Island Heron.
